Who is Turkey Brief?
Yusuf Can, Editor
Yusuf Can served as the Coordinator for the Middle East Program (MEP) at the Wilson Center. He focuses on the Middle East and North Africa and has expertise in Turkish politics, the Israel-Palestine conflict as well as tech policy. Mr. Can served as the editor for the program’s flagship publication, MENA360°, led the Future of EURO-MENA Project, Turkey-US diplomacy project, Ambassador Series project, and organized prominent MEP events and sessions, and plays a pivotal role in the creation and execution of new projects.
Can frequently contributed to media outlets such as the Guardian, BBC News, Business Insider, VOA News, El Independiente, and Expresso providing expert analysis on MENA affairs. His scholarly and journalistic works have been featured in publications, including the Wilson Center, Bulletin of the Atomic Sciences, and BirGun.
He earned an MA from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and a BA from Sacramento State University in Sacramento, California. He is originally from Istanbul, Turkey.
Kubra Nil Yilmazer, Curator
Kubra Nil Yilmazer is a historian and aspiring policy analyst with experience in public communication, legislative work, and advocacy. She graduated from Boğaziçi University. Her professional experience spans parliamentary advising, social media strategy, teaching, and editorial work—focusing on issues such as women’s rights, environmental justice, and migration. Most recently, she worked at the Turkish Parliament and Women’s rights organizations, where she led digital campaigns and developed data-driven policy proposals. She has collaborated with both grassroots organizations and international bodies like UN Women. Fluent in Turkish, English, and German, she brings a multilingual and interdisciplinary approach to political communication and historical research
Seda Gunes, Curator
Seda Gunes holds a master’s degree in Security Policy Studies from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University. Her research interests focus on irregular warfare, radicalism, violent extremism, and civil wars, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
